Melania Trump Makes Surprise Visit To Child Detention Facility In Texas

First Lady Melania Trump visited a child detention center in McAllen, Texas on Thursday. Mrs. Trump's office announced her visit after she had arrived at the Upbring New Hope Children’s Center, where 55 migrant children are currently being held.

A statement released by her office explained the reason for her surprise visit:

"First Lady Melania Trump has arrived in Texas to take part in briefings and tours at a nonprofit social services center for children who have entered the United States illegally and a customs and border patrol processing center. Her goals are to thank law enforcement and social services providers for their hard work, lend support and hear more on how the administration can build upon the already existing efforts to reunite children with their families."

The first lady's spokeswoman, Stephanie Grisham, said that Mrs. Trump "wanted to see everything for herself," adding that the first lady will "continue to let her husband know her opinions" on issues that are important to her.

Grisham pointed out that the trip "was 100 percent her idea" and was put together in just 48 hours. She made the decision before President Trump signed an executive order ending the separation of children from their parents. Trump fully supported her trip.

"This was her decision. She told her staff she wanted to go and we made that happen. He is supportive of it but she told him, 'I'm headed down to Texas,' and he supported it."

The first lady had planned to visit the Ursula Border Patrol Processing Center first but had to change her plans after heavy flooding blocked the route.
