the Raygun T-Shirt Shop in Des Moines has cleverly named this Saturdays game against the Drake Bulldogs as the Avail-a-Bowl, no truer words have been spoken. As Mother Nature deemed the game against South Dakota State unplayable by savaging the field with rain, thunder and lightning, the Cyclones were sent scrambling to find a 12th game at the end of the season. First thoughts were the State High School Champion Dowling Maroons only to find that a High School and Collegiate Division matchup is not allowed. Well how about another Catholic school, Notre Dame was booked so it was by natural progression Incarnate Word fell into place. There were conditions, Both Iowa State and Incarnate word realized the December 1st game would be null and void if either were to end up in their conference championship game. Incarnate word did make the playoffs and sent the Cyclones scrambling for a different opponent and behold the Drake Bulldogs are headed this way Saturday. I have mixed emotions, oh never doubt my allegiance is to the Cardinal and Gold, but having grown up in Des Moines I went to many Drake Games in the late 50's to the middle 60's. I also owned a bar just 2 blocks east of the Drake Campus in the 70's, "The Dog House Lounge," The students and faculty were paying my bills for several years. So when they take the field this Saturday their will be a small piece of loyalty given to the Bulldogs. That being said.....GO CYCLONES!
Iowa State and Drake meet for the final game of the season this Saturday. We'll begin our coverage with the Cyclone Tailgate Show at 7am in the Alumni Center and on 1430 KASI, 1430kasi.com and on your iHeart app.
