Ames police officers and firefighters responded Tuesday night to a call on the city's west side of a person who doused himself with gasoline and set himself on fire. Cmdr. Geoff Huff says the call came from apartments at 4714 Mortenson Rd. at about 10:40 p.m. He says by the time first responders arrived, nearby residents had used a fire extinguisher and a blanket to extinguish the fire. Huff says the individual sustained life threatening injuries and was flown to University of Iowa hospital. Huff says despite social media claims to the contrary, there was no police pursuit that preceded the victim setting himself on fire. victim's condition is unknown, and his identity is not being released.
