An Ames Police Department official insists they can't do anything about a wi-fi router in Campustown with a racist name. Cmdr. Geoff Huff says despite concerns from nearby residents about the name that uses a racial slur and invokes lynching, the department's hands are tied due to Constitutional freedom of speech protections and bans on illegal search and seizure by police. He says the department is concerned about what happens when the router's owner is identified, and could become the victim of harrassment or assault. Huff also says it's a bad idea to give your wi-fi router a name that could attract unwanted attention from hackers.
