Iowa State University is heading up a national institute for medical research. ISU says it's partnering with University of Iowa, University of Nebraska, Nebraska Medical Center, and the Mayo Clinic to fight medicine-resistant bacteria. Under the three-year agreement, ISU will provide office space and information technology support for the institute, which will be jointly funded with the University of Nebraska at $525,000 a year, for a total investment of nearly $1.6 million. Iowa State says each year in the U.S., at least two-million people become infected with bacteria resistant to antibiotics, and 23,000 die as a direct result of these infections.
