So, Rep. Steve King (R-IA 4) says President Obama is "leading from behind" as we watch Iraq, predictably, tear itself apart. "We should have seen this coming," he says. "We need to step in and do something about it," he says.
So, after 8 years, 8 months, 3 weeks, and 4 days...what? We should go back? After 4,487 dead Americans we should go back and get more Americans killed? Let's kill 110,000 more Iraqis and see if we can come any closer to solving "the problem." That, my friends, is entirely the issue. We don't understand the problem. We have presumed, since 2003, that the Iraqi people want what we were trying to give them--freedom and democracy. Understand that Iraqis have never, ever, ever had freedom in the sense that we understand it.
This problem is, without question, President Obama's. He didn't start the war, but he now gets to figure out what "comes next." What "comes next" is sure to be ugly, bloody, and begs a question. Was it worth it? Was it worth the thousands of deaths to find WMDs that didn't exist and give freedom to people who wouldn't know what to do with it? No.
History will not look kindly upon us as Iraq rips itself apart.
