It seems like I've been here before. Something about Iowa State and Kansas playing in the Big 12 tournament semifinals after the Jayhawks swept the regular season series feels familiar to me. Maybe because this is what happened last season? Yeah, that's probably it.
Anyway, what can I tell you about this matchup you don't already know. The Jayhawks are still the best team in the conference, even without Joel Embiid. Super Freshman Andrew Wiggins is playing his best basketball right now. KU's "role" players would be considered big time stars at most other Big 12 programs.
Meanwhile, ISU will lean on their "Big 3" of Melvin Ejim, DeAndre Kane and Georges Niang. They'll need their own role players like Monte Morris and Dustin Hogue to do what they do, but to beat a team like Kansas, the Cyclones will need their stars to play like it.
It should be a great game and a great atmosphere. But you already knew that.
A little bit about me....
I've been Sports Director at News/Talk 1430 KASI since December 2005. I graduated from Iowa State just a few months before that. My career has also taken me to such exotic locals as Estherville, and Storm Lake, Iowa, Owatonna, Minnesota, and Silver City, New Mexico (long story-don't ask). I've also had the pleasure of working part-time at WOI Radio in Ames and WHO Radio in Des Moines while I was a student.
I'm a native of Maplewood, Minnesota, a suburb of St. Paul. It was there that I was inflicted with the curse of being a Minnesota Vikings fan. There is still no known cure, though many times I wish there was. I'm also an avid follower of the Minnesota Twins and of course, the Iowa State Cyclones.
