HIRTA braces for layoffs, budget cuts

Layoffs and steep budget cuts appear to be in the future of the Heart of Iowa Regional Transit Agency.  Documents submitted to the Story County Board of Supervisors this week show HIRTA is running a deficit of more than $285,000. Last fiscal year the agency had a surplus over $150,000.  Officials say they expect ridership in Story County to decline by 2,400 rides per month, and Medicaid funding to drop at least 20 percent. HIRTA provides door-to-door bus rides to the elderly, people with mental and physical disabilities and general public in Story County and six others in central Iowa.
