City Council advances rental cap

The Ames City Council gave second-reading approval Tuesday to a rental occupancy cap for neighborhoods near the Iowa State University campus.  At-large Council Member Amber Corrieri and Fourth Ward member Chris Nelson continued their oppositon to the 25-percent cap.  Nelson says a lack of data on the cap's effects will result in unintendend consequnces that could harm property owners in the areas.  First Ward Council Member Gloria Betcher countered Nelson's desire for more data, saying the neighborhoods can't wait, as more properties are lost to rentals. A May 22nd third reading of the ordinance will also include a discussion of relief for property owners harmed by the cap, the setting of boundaries for areas under the cap, and a possible extention of a moritorium on rental permits.
