Arrest Made In Year-Old Ames Rape Case

Ames police have charged a 23-year-old man with raping a woman at a park more than a year ago. Commander Geoff Huff says Devontez David Voigts, formerly of Ames, was charged Tuesday with first-degree sexual assault, first-degree kidnapping and willful injury causing serious injury. Huff says DNA testing performed by the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation and an independent lab helped identify the suspect, though it also delayed the investigation. Voigts is accused of kidnapping the victim and taking her to Franklin Park in west Ames where she was raped and strangled. Voigts made his initial appearance in Story County court Tuesday morning where bond was set at $2 million dollars. He was transferred from the Newton Correctional Facility where he was being held for unrelated reasons.
