Ames man charged with injuring officer, stealing truck

An Ames man faces multiple charges after allegedly stealing a truck and injuring a police officer. Michael Alexander Schank, 25, is charged with 2nd-degree theft, interference with official acts while inflicting serious injury, assaulting a police officer, driving while suspended, leaving the scene of an accident and unlawful possession of a prescription drug. Police say officers responded to a report Monday of a vehicle driving recklessly, nearly hitting a person and sign post at the corner of 9th and Kellogg. About the same time, police were called about a stolen truck. Officers located Schank and the vehicle in the 2200 block of Edison St. They say Schank's vehicle swerved to avoid the intersection of Dayton and Lincoln Way, striking another vehicle. Schank continued to a parking lot north of the collision, where he tried to enter another vehicle. Schank allegedly assaulted an officer trying to place him under arrest, breaking his wrist and causing an injury to his eye.
