Collective bargaining law brings new negotiations, lawsuit

Changes to the state's collective bargaining law are forcing the Iowa board of Regents to restart contract negotiations.  A board spokesperson says after Gov. Branstad signed the changes into law Friday, the regents were advised to start the process over.  The regents have been involved in contract negotiations with university-affiliated unions since November.   Also, there is a lawsuit coming against the new collective bargaining law.  AFSCME Local 61 president Danny Homan said last week he will file a lawsuit against the law.  The suit is expected this week.  The law allows most public sector workers to only negotiate for base wages during contract talks.  Branstad said the measure is a needed update from the original 1974 law and he also said it'll benefit taxpayers.
